Climbing

Climbing is an activity in Scouting that requires specialized training to facilitate outings for your unit.  Below are upcoming climbing trainings of various levels for those interested in climbing at different skill levels.

BSA Climbing Instructor Training

Date: April 26 - 28, 2019
Location:  Oregon City

and

Date: May 3 - 5, 2019
Location:  Horsethief Butte/Maryhill State Park - Dallesport

ATTENDANCE AT BOTH WEEKENDS IS REQUIRED

Cost:  $125 - covers food, lodging and course materials.

Refund Policy: Cancel up to 30 days prior for full refund, up to 2 weeks prior for 50% refund, within 2 weeks receives no refund.

Participants will enjoy two weekends of classroom and hands-on training, including instruction in Climbing Technique, Safety Considerations, Gear Selection and Care, Group Instruction and Route Selection and Set-Up. These topics will be presented by experienced members of the council climbing committee.

The first weekend will focus on classroom sessions in Oregon City. The second weekend will be hands-on skills at Horsethief Butte.

Persons age 16 and 17 are able to attend with a paying adult, but only those 18 and up are eligible to receive a training card as a BSA Climbing Instructor. Upon successful completion of this course, individuals satisfactorily demonstrating their instructional, management and anchoring skills will receive a training card as a "BSA Climbing Instructor". A training card will be granted at the successful completion of the course, and with the approval of training staff.

Course prerequisites: MUST have prior climbing experience; this is not a beginner class. Must also be current in Youth Protection training, Weather Hazard training, Climb-On Safely training and have a current BSA medical form signed by your physician (available at www.cpcbsa.org/medical). BRING COPIES OF THESE TO THE FIRST SESSION, PLEASE.

Registration is first-come first-served and class size is limited, so register early to claim your spot!

A climbing helmet, harness and 24 foot piece of 1 inch tubular webbing are required both weekends. If you have your own equipment, you may bring it to class (all personal equipment will be subject to inspection by the staff to ensure that it meets BSA standards.)

BSA Climbing For Beginners

Date: May 3 - 5, 2019
Location: Horsethief Butte/Maryhill State Park - Dallesport

Cost:  $60 - covers food, lodging and course materials.

Refund Policy: Cancel up to 30 days prior for full refund, up to 2 weeks prior for 50% refund, within 2 weeks receives no refund.

This training class will consist of combined classroom and practical time. This class will cover BSA policy on climbing requirements, proper clothing, gear, venues, skills, supervision and hands on experience of the BSA “Climbing Merit Badge”.  You will get excellent hands-on training and experience. Youth ages 14 to 18 may register with an adult that is registered.

This is a beginners class, no training cards are issued, but if you have little or no prior experience this is a pre-requisite for the BSA Climbing Instructor’s Class.

BSA Climbing Re-Certification Course

Date: 5/3/2019 at 6:30PM - 5/5/2019 at 5:00PM
Location:  Horsethief Butte/Maryhill State Park - Dallesport

Cost:  $60 - covers updated class materials, meals, and camping fees

Refund Policy: Cancel up to 30 days prior for full refund, up to 2 weeks prior for 50% refund, within 2 weeks receives no refund.

Re-Certification is open to those with a current training card or no more than 6 months past the expired date.  The Climbing Re-Certification Course is held at Maryhill State Park and Horsethief Butte. Level 1’s need to be evaluated annually and Level 2’s every three years to maintain current training. The course is from 6:30pm Friday till 5pm Sunday. Be sure to bring lots of water, helmet, harness, gloves, gear logs and camping gear. You will also need to bring current copies of your Youth Protection, Weather Hazard, Climb on Safely and 1st Aid/CPR Training and a current Medical Form Parts A, B and C signed by your doctor.
