Sunset Trail District Adult Leader Training Extravaganza 2009!

Online registration for Advancement Extravaganza begins January 5!

Advancement Extravaganza 2009 is February 21 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church,
5650 SW Hall Blvd in Beaverton.
At this annual all-day adult-only training event, knowledgeable instructors will lead courses
designed to help scout leaders strengthen their understanding of the advancement policies and procedures
of the Boy Scouts of America and Cascade Pacific Council.
This is the best opportunity of the year to learn about advancement policies and procedures and have your
advancement-related questions answered.
Go to Advancement Extravaganza to view class schedules and course descriptions.
Register by February 15 and pay only $12.
Registration after February 15 is $20.
Participants may choose up to five information- and tip-packed courses from a variety of options
covering all aspects of advancement in the different scouting programs.
In addition, each participant will receive an official AE2009 binder, class handouts, advancement resources, and lunch.

Skiing at Timberline!
If you go to the new Timberline Website You can now navigate to the special deals they are offering to scouts.
Go to "Play on the Mountain", then click on "Group Planning".
You will then see the Scout Emblem to access the Scout section with contact information for planning your scout day on the mountain.
Timberline has also made a special request.
They would like to replace the Group Photo at the top every week or so with a picture of scouts at Timberline,
so if you have pictures of your scouts at Timberline, or will have some, please send them to:

District Roundtable!

Beaverton LDS Stake Center

Roundtable is the monthly leaders meeting
offering training on a variety of subjects,
announce upcoming events,
and provide support materials.
Roundtable is also a good way to strengthen
your units program and receive assistance
from experienced leaders.

All leaders are welcome to attend. We have something for everyone.

All charters should be completed online before submitting with payment
at the Council Office Downtown Portland.
You must have completed signatures and applications as needed.

New Leader Background Checks!

Leaders who were registered in the Boy Scouts of America prior to April 2003, will need to submit to a background check.

As dedicated BSA volunteers, you understand the importance of keep our youth safe in the Scouting program.
To ensure Youth Protection, our organization has conducted background checks of new volunteers since April 2003.
Volunteers who have not had a background check will receive a letter explaining the need to consent for a background check
and direct volunteers to a website to begin the process.
The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act mandates the organization have consent for a background check.
Letters with the Web site information are scheduled to be mailed by June 2, 2008.
The Web address is www.bsacbc, and will be active from June 1 until August 1, 2008.

Volunteers who decline the authorization for a background check will lose their BSA Membership.
A new BSA application will be required to renew their membership status, and at that time, a background check will be conducted.

2009 Centennial Quality Unit Commitment!
Let's recommit ourselves to the 2008 Quality Unit Award.
The Quality Unit Award is an award that recognizes unit achievement
in the areas of leader training, membership recruiting, Scout rank
advancement, and outdoor activities.
The award is unique since it allows the unit to set its own goals.
The award is given to all Scouts and their leaders that meet or exceed their goals.
Please complete the 2009 Quality Unit Commitment Form and turn it in with your Recharter or
Mail it to the Volunteer Service Center.


2008 Quality Unit Award!
The Quality Unit Award Recognition is now available from your unit commissioner, district commissioner,
or district executive. Forms can also be submitted to the Volunteer Service Center, Portland Scout office.

Major Features of the Program

* Improve and increase adult leader training.
* Improve youth recruitment and retention.
* Improve parent participation.
* Improve youth advancement.
* Improve outdoor program participation.
* Improve annual program planning.

Please take the time to complete the Quality Unit Form and return the forms for unit and youth recognitions.
Every unit that qualifies for the award will receive a unit streamer (no cost to the unit).
Youth can receive patches for their uniform though the Scout Shop.
These patches are sold a minimal cost.
Most youth in Scouting want to be part of a quality program with trained leaders.
Let's recognize our units for their hard work.

NEW District Vice-Chairman of Membership!
We are pleased to announce the newest member of the District Committee, David Bennett.
David will serve as District Vice-Chairman of Membership and Relationships with in the district.
He will be training our Charter Representatives sometime during the year.
Also, the position requires annual contacts with our chartering organizations.
It is important that our chartering organizations are not just approving our leadership and signing our charters,
but are made aware of the successes and concerns of the unit.
We are all doing something great in our units.
Let's share the news.
David also will work with our unit commissioners and unit leaders to ensure regular contracts are made with our chartering organiztions.
Unit Commissioners should still be contacted with requests for advise and support.
David's role is to provide support to the chartering organizations.
Let's welcome David Bennett has be begins this new adventure with our district.
