What Makes a Trained Leader?

A Scout leader is considered fully trained and entitled to wear the Trained Leader emblem (see above) when he or she has completed general training courses and the specific training for the position.   General training courses required for all leaders include Fast Start, Youth Protection Training, and This is Scouting.

Many courses are available through the BSA Online Learning Center.  You will be asked to sign in to MyScouting for online learning.  If you are new to Scouting, you will be asked to create a MyScouting account, which requires your BSA registration number.

In addition, Boy Scout Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, and Venturing Advisors of crews with an outdoor program  must complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) Training through the district or council.

Important: Required courses are different based on program, either Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing, or General depending on what program you are training for.
