Someone told me scouts do projects and often are looking for something to do. I need a piece of furniture built, a dresser, but I haven't been able to find anything that fits my needs. I am wondering if that would be a project one of your scouts would be interested in discussing with me. I am in the Hillsdale area of Portland and I would be more than grateful if someone could help. I would certainly pay for the cost of materials and the construction services. The other is set up for summertime activities by our many troops and packs. The first photos added to that are from Troop 22 on a camp out at Honeyman Park. We need more photos for this album! As your troops and packs go to camp or have other fun activities please take lots of pictures so we can continue to say that we are the best district of them all. Mary District Website and You http://www.cpcbsa.org/lewisandclark//article.php?story=20080624181800479 http://www.cpcbsa.org/lewisandclark//article.php?story=20080624181800479 Tue, 24 Jun 2008 18:18:00 -0700 http://www.cpcbsa.org/lewisandclark//article.php?story=20080624181800479#comments System Recently I took another look at the websites for all of the other districts in our council, and many, many sites in different councils; and I can say with all honesty that I believe we have one of the best district websites available. We have in fact received compliments on our district site from people outside our district, so this isn't just my opinion as District Web Master. But I've noticed a trend of our not taking advantage of all this resource our website has to offer. So I thought I’d send a quick review just to remind us of all the features that are available and what we can do on the site. One of the main purposes of the site is to post district news, service opportunities, information about upcoming events, etc. All of these posts appear on the main page of the website. As new articles are added older articles move into archives and are viewable there. Who can post these articles? *You* can. Another important, and vastly underused, feature of the website is an online calendar. We have a great many different district and council events that are important to all scouts and scouters in our district. Roundtable, commissioners meetings, training opportunities, camporee, webelos woods, etc, etc, etc. The online calendar has the ability to not only list events, but provide details of the activity including start/ending times and location. Who can add dates to the calendar, again the answer is *you* can. Links? We've got to other scouting related websites there. Have a troop or pack site? Add your link. Find a great resource online? Please, add the link. Have some files that need to be available to everyone in the district? We have an area for downloads. What can go here? Pack or troop flyers, lists of merit badge councilors, packets for information about upcoming activities, district troop/pack contact lists, and more. Who can upload a file, *you* can. Last, but not least, there is a media gallery where you will find hundreds of pictures from various district events such as Camporee, Cub-O-Ree, Klondike Derby, etc. And these pictures aren't just from our fabulous district photo staff, but guess what? *You* may add your own pictures to the mix. The district website has been set up as a community site, meaning that any registered user of the district website may add articles to the main page, dates to the calendar, links for other sites, files for download and media to the media gallery. For safety reasons any new content must be approved before it appears. This happens regularly at least once each day, often more. So nothing should have to wait very long once you submit it. As a community site it will only be what you make of it. If you don’t see the things that are important to you then it’s your responsibility as a member of the community to add it. If you are have trouble adding new content, let me know and I will do my best to assist you. With all that’s there we could yet have more. We could conduct user polls; we could have a web forum or the ability to send private messages to users of the site; we can add more topics for articles, links and downloads to better organize content. If a feature is not there that you feel is important don’t just assume it’s not an option, ask and I’ll see what can be done. Some things might not be possible, but if you don’t ask we’ll never even know someone is interested. ~Mark 2008 Lewis & Clark District Dinner Recap http://www.cpcbsa.org/lewisandclark//article.php?story=20080602104633202 http://www.cpcbsa.org/lewisandclark//article.php?story=20080602104633202 Mon, 02 Jun 2008 10:46:35 -0700 http://www.cpcbsa.org/lewisandclark//article.php?story=20080602104633202#comments District News District Dinner this past Saturday was a big success. Thank you to the Silver Beavers, who conducted our flag ceremony - and congratulations to our newest Silver Beaver, Jack Scrivener. The Band followed ably with the National Anthem and God Bless America. Scott Faunt of Troop 64 delivered a moving eulogy of long-time Scouter Joe Swindel. We were fortunate that Fr. Richard, Pastor of All Saints Parish, was able to join us and deliver the invocation. The food was delicious and we were honored to have Council President Gene Grant and many District leaders join us for the evening. Our speaker was Eagle Scout/Silver Beaver/Police Commander Tim Sessions, who gave a very inspirational and thought-provoking presentation on the importance of Scouting values to society, and how these values have played a role in his own life. Pack, Troop and Crew of the Year went to Holy Redeemer (417), Laurelhurst Presbyterian (22) and St. Ignatius (351), respectively, and Jessica Keinberger was recognized in absentia for having received the Council Venturing Leadership Award at Council Court of Honor. Troop 22 Scouts were present and displayed the esprit de corps that has made them so successful. Steve Miller (49) was our 2007 Scoutmaster of the Year, while our Cubmaster of the Year was Mark Gravengaard (47) and the District Award of Merit was conferred upon Mr. Butch Keepers, whose daughter received it on his behalf. Other adult leaders were recognized for their accomplishments, including Dan Toyooka, Chris Labuhn and Sharon Bell-Glenn. Troop 420 was recognized for their work with the hospitalized children of Pack and Troop 23 (Providence Fragile Kids' Center). Special thanks go out our emcee, District Commissioner Joe Carter, as well as our District Dinner Chair, Dr. Earl Wiest. Our compliments to the chefs, Martin Cavinaw and Marty Martin. We are also grateful to the behind-the-scenes contributions of Dan Toyooka, Bruce Woodruff-Biggs, and the Labuhns. Special thanks go to District Photojournalist Mary Wardell and her husband Mark for taking time away from their own Scout Troop (112) to record the evening's events. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our 2008 Lewis & Clark District Dinner. We look forward to seeing you at our end-of-the-year Roundtable on Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Rose City Park United Methodist Church (58th & Alameda).
