Welcome to a new year of scouting! We've already begun to post pictures from our new season. First an album of Rountable fun from the September meeting. Then a new album where we can all show off the activities of our packs and Troops. First up a Raingutter Regatta from the September 25th combined pack meeting of Packs 55, 119 & 719. Check out the pictures and join in the fun yourselves. There are three ways to join in: 1. send me the files you want posted; 2. send me a link to where you have posted your files and I will copy and post onto the district site & 3. you can post the pictures directly onto the site where they will go into a queue and we will clear them to be in the album. (We have to do the last this way for security reasons.) ·

If you are a new leader or have changed leadership positions within Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity or Venturing, then come get trained. We are aiming for 100% trained “direct-contact” leadership (that is, leaders who work directly with youth).
Help us achieve this goal by attending this training, which will help you and your Scouting unit in the long run.
Every leader in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts and Venturing needs the first training: NEW LEADER ESSENTIALS from 8:00 – 9:30. If you already have this training, you do not need it again.
Break out will be around 9:30 for all other training, including DEN CHIEF TRAINING!!
Learn the tricks of the trade and how you can be a more effective leader for your kids
Remember, ever Scouts deserves a trained leader!

Ft. Vancouver (across the river) has a program, beginning this year, which may be of interest to some of your scouts, the Young Engage School. This is a formal training program for living history interpreters between the ages of 8 and 18.
Classes will be held on the third Saturday of each month, January through May, 9:30-4:30. They must commit to the entire 5 months of training.
They will be taught carpentry, cooking, animal life and trapping skills, gardening and interpretation. The program is free, but in return they must agree to volunteer for a minimum of 40 hours during the next 12 months. Historic clothing will be provided by the fort, as well as lunch.
To be considered for the program, the youth need to fill out an application, which is available from Eileen Trestain, 360-281-7120, or by writing to the Young Engage School, Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 500 East Reserve St., Vancouver WA 98661
Applications must be submitted by November 15, and enrollment is limited.
For those who have a real interest in history, this is an ideal program.

Take a look at this link in our links folder and see an afternoon flag ceremony at Camp Discovery, our metro Cub Scout day camp up on Scouters' Mountain. A den leader filmed and edited this video and posted it up on Youtube. It's worth watching.

I am a low income senior and I am wondering if one or more of your scouts might be able to help me. Someone told me scouts do projects and often are looking for something to do. I need a piece of furniture built, a dresser, but I haven't been able to find anything that fits my needs. I am wondering if that would be a project one of your scouts would be interested in discussing with me. I am in the Hillsdale area of Portland and I would be more than grateful if someone could help. I would certainly pay for the cost of materials and the construction services.
Thank you,
Bernadine

Look in the Media Gallery for pictures of Camp Discovery which is located on Scouters' Mountain in Happy Valley. Many of the staffers are scouts from the Lewis & Clark District and many of our Packs bring their Cubs for a fun week of skits, songs, crafts, games and visits to the ranges for archery and bb guns.
If anyone has photos of their cubs from Discovery they would like to share, either add them to this album or contact me at: mary@mmj-ent.com ·
