Over 40 Area Mayors Expected to Break Speed Limits With Cub Scouts
Pinewood Derby Races to be held at Pioneer Courthouse Square and State Capitol Building
([Portland], [Or], [08/19/03]) On Friday, August 29th, over 40 Portland/Vancouver and Salem area mayors will gather to compete in a lively pinewood derby race for the purpose of promoting the Cascade Pacific Council, Boy Scouts of America Fun At Every Turn Cub Scout membership campaign. Two pinewood derby events will be held, one for the Portland/Vancouver area and one for the Salem area. The Portland event will be held on Friday, August 29th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Pioneer Courthouse Square, and the Salem event will be held Saturday, September 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the State Capitol Building. Eugene Grant, Mayor of Happy Valley, is the chair of the Portland event, and Dave Galati, executive director of Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments, is organizing and assisting with the Salem event. Scouts, as well as the community, are welcome to attend to help support area Mayors and promote Scouting membership. The fun-filled events will be free of charge. Each Mayor will be matched up with a Cub Scout who resides in the Mayor's community. The Cub Scout will design the car and will assist the Mayor in the race.

It is estimated that the Fun At Every Turn membership campaign will result in 10,000 new Cub Scouts. The Fun At Every Turn membership campaign is designed to inform parents and Cub Scout-aged youth about Scouting benefits. Cub Scouting is the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) program for boys in first through fifth grade who are led by strong adult mentors. The BSA provides a comprehensive year-round program of outdoor adventure and community service, that helps build character, and self-esteem in youth. Other BSA programs include Boy Scouts (vigorous outdoor program) for boys ages 11-17, Varsity Scouting (high-adventure experiences) for boys ages 14-17, Venturing (high-adventure experiences) for young men and women ages 14-20), Sea Scouting (adventure and challenges on sea and land) for young men and women ages 14-21, and Exploring (work-site based program) for young men and women ages 14-21. Locally the Cascade Pacific Council is the 10th largest council in the nation, boasting over 16,000 adult mentors who help serve over 54,000 youth. This last year Scouts of the Cascade Pacific Council reached out to the community and achieved the following outstanding accomplishments:
Goodwill/Good Turn-Scouts collected approximately 350,000 pounds of usable clothing and household goods for Goodwill Industries.
Camping Program-The Cascade Pacific Council has one of the strongest outdoor camping programs in the country, camping 12,000 boys at 9 summer resident camps and 10 day camps last year.
Scouting for Food-Scouts collected approximately 555,000 pounds of food for local hunger relief agencies through the Scouting for Food drive.
Guy Miller Tree Plant-Over 2,200 youth and family members planted nearly 32,550 tree seedlings in our forests and neighborhoods in support of the Guy Miller Tree Plant program. This program has accounted for the planting of nearly 2 million trees since its inception.
Community Service-Scouts contributed more than 1.3 million hours of service to local communities last year.
Violence Free Spring Break-In partnership with the Portland Police Bureau, the Police Activities League and other organizations the Scouts have assisted with numerous programs and activities including “Violence Free Spring Break,” an event where over 350 at-risk youth members utilized Scout facilities.
Outreach-Over $36,000 in scholarships was awarded to over 590 youth members for summer camp.
