Racecar Driver Christian Fittipaldi and Paul Page "Voice of the Indianapolis 500" receive awards
([Portland], [Or], [06/13/01])- The Cascade Pacific Council, Boy Scouts of America will honor a racing champion at the 7:30 a.m. Motorsports Breakfast and ceremony June 21 at the Oregon Convention Center. Racecar driver, Christian Fittipaldi will be awarded the "2001 Motor Sportsman of the Year Award", while Paul Page will be the recipient for a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Oregon Chapter of the Sports Car Club of America will also be recognized. An official Portland Rose Festival Event, the Motor Sports Breakfast is expected to attract a crowd of more than 700 people and will kick off the Rose Festival's Indy car weekend. For those in attendance racecars will also be on display. Proceeds from the breakfast support local Scouting outreach efforts.
Paul Page, this year's Lifetime Achievement recipient wastes no time speeding up to the microphone to inform sports enthusiasts around the world of racing events as they happen. Many know him as the "voice" of the Indianapolis 500. His impressive career includes currently hosting ABC and NBC auto racing coverage. His honors and successes have accelerated over the years as fast as the Indy cars he so frequently provides reports about. He has won AP, UPI and Indianapolis Press Club awards for hard news reporting. In addition, he has won two Iris awards from the National Association of Television Program Executives for his impressive features on auto racing.
Christian Fittipaldi, this years Motor Sportsman of the Year recipient was experiencing the excitement of auto racing before he took his first step. So it was no surprise that this 30-year-old is now a checkered flag veteran of the motor sports industry. Leading the pack both on and off the track, Fittipaldi follows in the "tracks" and traditions of his father Wilson and Uncle Emerson. As a child he witnessed both is father and uncle round the corners of successful auto racing careers. It is Fittipaldi today who continues this fast paced, family tradition winning one competitive championship after another.
Promoting sports car racing since 1962, the Oregon Region of the Sports Car Club of America has conducted numerous autocross, rally and club racing events, including the Rose Cup Races, one of the largest amateur sports car racing weekends in the country. The 1300+ membership can be found coast to coast providing worker and support services to other SCCA regions and many professional events , including the local CART Race at Portland International Raceway.
