BOY SCOUTS have completed the fifth grade or are
11 through 18 years old. Boy Scout troops, made up of
smaller patrols, meet each week with adult male leaders
to develop outdoor skills, to learn and practice
leadership techniques, to compete individually and as a
team, and much, much more.
They earn merit badges and advance in rank, and accept
new responsibilities. Emphasis is on the outdoors. Boy
Scouts hike, backpack, sail, swim, canoe, fish, and ride
horseback, to name only a few activities. Campouts are
held monthly, and in summer Boy Scout troops go to camp
for a weeklong experience.
VARSITY SCOUTING presents an extra challenge to
young men 14 through 18, emphasizing sports, and
including advancement, high adventure, personal
development, service to people and organizations, and
special programs and events. Varsity Scouts advance
through Boy Scout requirements and, through specific
accomplishments, qualify for Varsity Scout (VS) letters
and bars.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PARENTS
It is important that you attend the Boy Scout Troop's
Open House with your son to learn more about the
programs and activities, and to encourage his
participation. In today's world, positive influences are
more essential than ever. For more than 75 years, Boy
Scouts of America has helped to prepare young people for
a productive adulthood through emphasis on character
building, citizenship training, and personal fitness.
Your interest and cooperation will help your child gain
the most from the Scouting experience. Scouting is
especially meaningful in the case of single parents.
Activities are planned so that every member and every
parent can take part. Some expense is involved in
Scouting membership. Most units require small weekly
dues, and each member supplies his own handbook,
uniform, and personal equipment. In addition, each
spring all parents are given the opportunity to make a
contribution to the annual operating budget of the local
council, if they wish to do so, through the Friends of
Scouting campaign.
