Camp Service Award
(The Hoedag Award)

The Hodag is a hoe-like tool with an elongated blade used for planting trees, a common tool in early Northwest forests.
For Scouters today, it symbolizes service to forest and recreation areas.

You're putting in lots of hours helping to improve and maintain camp properties, and we'd like to recognize your efforts with a nice pin for your uniform.

Here are two suggestions for starting on your Hodag Award:

Work Weekends are great times to get together with other Scouters in service to camps. (Work Weekend Info)

Adopt-A-Projects are special projects identified by camp rangers as ones that a pack, troop, family, service club, or other group could ‘adopt’ and successfully complete. Some are complicated; others easy...all are fun to accomplish as a group. Please ask the ranger at your favorite camp for project ideas, or visit www.cpcbsa.org/adopt for more details and a list of project ideas.

Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be helping to improve your camp properties for your Scouts today and into the future. Thank you!

There are two awards, Silver and Gold. Qualifications are:

Silver: Be age 14 or older; provide 25 hours of service* at council properties.

Gold: Achieve Silver Hodag Award, provide 25 additional service hours*, and participate in at least one Adopt-A-Project (see ranger for project list).

* hours for Hodag credit should not also be counted toward rank advancement requirements.

Please use the Hodag Record Card to record your service hours. The card is available from any ranger or you may download and print it yourself. Hint: print two sided and cut out cards for others in your unit.

Use one card for each (Silver/Gold) award, and circle the award for which you're applying. Return the card to any council camp ranger.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I've done lots of service in the past, can I get the award? The award is designed to get folks engaged in the fun of camp service projects; since you're already doing that, yes we'd love to recognize your service. Fill out a card and give to a ranger or bring to the camping department at the Portland office. Be sure to tell your friends about this opportunity as well.

Can service hours be used for both the Hodag Award and rank advancement? Hours for Hodag credit should not also be counted toward rank advancement requirements.

Why is there an age limitation of age 14 or older? Safety is of paramount concern during work projects. Older Scouts tend to be safer and more mature.
