Winter Lodge

Aubrey Lodge sits in the shadow of Mount Hood, a few miles East of Government Camp, Oregon.

The lodge features a large main hall with fireplace.

Four kitchens provide shared cooking areas for visiting units

Bring simple, easy-to-prepare meals such as hot dogs, cocoa, etc; everyone loves a warm treat when they come in from the slopes

A tubing hill is just outside the lodge. Tubes are provided at the lodge.

Adults are asked to volunteer as a Hill Safety Officer for an hour or so during their stay - to help keep everyone safe

The hike in is about 1/4 mile on mostly flat terrain. Wear boots, as the snow can be deep at times.

The parking lot is an Oregon Sno Park, and it is rather small, so be sure to carpool.

Remember your SNO-PARK permit! Officers do patrol the lot, and do issue tickets to vehicles without a permit.

Tip - bring a sled to drag in gear and food. It cannot be used on the hill (innertubes only), but will help a great deal for hiking in and out.

Nanitch sits just North of Government Camp. The lodge faces a tubing hill, accessed from the basement thrugh the tunnel seen in the lower right of this photo.

A fireplace helps warm the lodge, and provides a nice spot to relax

Remember to bring a SNO-PARK permit for all vehicles. Oregon State Police does patrol the Sno-Park, and ticket vehicles without permits.

The trail to the lodge is across the road from the Sno-Park. Use extreme caution crossing the road and climbing up to the trail.

The Sno-Park is shown in the right of this photo. Be sure to back-in all vehicles, and park closely to allow more vehicles in this small parking area.

When snow comes, much of the hut is covered

With much more snow, the tower is the only access to the lodge. The tower provides additonal emergency exit in case of heavy overnight snow.

Wintertime entrance is on the upper floor.

A small kitchen with propane stove. Propane lights are the only light source, as there is no electricity.

Making a Winter Lodge Reservation

Phlox Hut Dates Phlox Hut is a small (max 8 persons) cabin near Timberline Lodge. This cabin is available for age 14 and older youth and their adult leaders. Phlox Hut Dates
Troops, Teams, and Crews may utilize Phlox Hut (no packs). Phlox sleeps a maximum of 8 persons. Phlox will be available for every Fri/Sat and Sat/Sun for the months of December, January, February, and March. Three-day weekends such as Presidents' Day and MLK Day will have Sun/Mon availability. Units may also use weekday dates; those are special-request by email to info@cpcbsa.org.

Phlox reservations will also be online using the same schedule as the other lodges.

Cascade Pacific Council operates three lodges on the slopes of Mount Hood. These lodges are operated for Scout use each weekend, December through March. Each weekend date is assigned to an age group (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, etc) to keep the tubing hills safe and everyone smiling.

Lodge Weather Policy

Lodges are open unless ODOT closes the highway with no alternate routes, resulting in no access to the lodge. ODOT notices are posted at www.tripcheck.com. Please BE PREPARED for winter driving by visiting www.tripcheck.com for road conditions, and prepare accordingly. No refunds are provided unless ODOT closes the highway.

Volunteers Needed!

The winter lodge program can only exist through the service of Winter Lodge Directors who each serve as host for one or two weekends each winter. Lodge Directors care for the building, turning on water, power, and other utilities, and shutting them down properly to prevent freezing when the weekend is over.

Lodge director benefits:

A small stipend to help with fuel costs and sno-park permit.

Opportunity to sign up a troop or pack early for preferred dates.

Free Winter Lodge Director hat.

Option to purchase Winter Lodge Director fleece jacket.

Warm feelings from helping Scouts have a great (and safe) adventure at the winter lodges!

New lodge directors serve initially as an 'apprentice' to learn the details of each lodge before hosting weekends on their own. Once they've learned both lodges, they're ready to host the lodges on their own.
