Changes in Winter Lodge progam

DOWNLOAD: New flyer detailing changes for this year's winter lodge program

The popular Winter Lodge program will change somewhat this year due to a change in needed service. In the past, it was necessary to mobilize a small army for one day in September to cut, split, move, and stack wood for each lodge. Now, with the installation of very efficient electronic wood-burning furnaces, we are burning about 1/3 the amount of wood of previous seasons. We now have enough wood for this winter and possibly two winters.  Thus, there is no longer a need for several hundred persons on one day...but there are several other things the lodges need in order to better serve members:

Renovation projects planned

There are many other projects that our well-used lodges need.  For example, rot repair and window replacement is needed at Nanitch, and the renovation of all bathrooms in Aubrey-Watzik Lodge will greatly enhance user comfort in both lodges.  These projects need to be completed during the warmer summer months.  In leiu of a large Wood Cut, lodge chairmen need to transfer much of that manpower to summertime service days.

Summer Service Dates

Several dates have been scheduled during the summer for much-needed service at Nanitch and Aubrey-Watzak lodges. Those dates are:

June 26 - Nanitch, 8am-4pm, limit of about 12 skilled adults, plus about 50 youth/adults to move wood
July 10 - Nanitch, 8am-4pm, limit of about 12 skilled adults
July 24 - Nanitch, 8am-4pm, limit of about 12 skilled adults
August 7 - Aubrey, 8am-4pm, limit of about 12 skilled adults
August 21 - Aubrey, 8am-4pm, limit of about 12 skilled adults
September 11 - Aubrey, 8am-4pm, limit of about 12 skilled adults
September 18 - Traditional Wood Cut date at both lodges, limit of about 100 persons to move wood into place for winter
September 19 - Online signups begin for Boy Scout and older units that participated in service days
October 3 - Online signups begin for all Boy Scout and older units
October 9 - Traditional Clean-Up day at Aubrey lodge for Cub Scout packs
October 10 - Online signups begin for Cub Scout packs that participated in service days
October 24 - Online signups begin for all Cub Scout packs

Units that participate in these service dates will benefit from 1) an opportunity to reserve their lodge dates before the reservation system opens to all units, 2) they will also enjoy a discounted rate for winter lodge use, and 3) they will have an enjoyable day on the mountain helping out the lodges so everyone can have another great winter.

Most of these dates have a limit on participation to maintain safe and efficient work areas. Some dates are be adults-only for the same reasons.  Many of these projects need adults with carpentry and related skills.

Registration required, please.  Important information is collected in the reservation
process which will help planners organize the service day.

Change in winter reservation system

Previously, all units providing service at the Wood Cut or Clean-Up days participated in a lottery system to select dates.  Because the service dates now stretch over the entire summer, it doesn't make logistical sense to hold an in-person lottery drawing.

Instead, all reservations will be made online - with units that particpate in these service dates getting early-access to make their reservations before the system opens to all other units (details will be provided at the service dates).  Units that participate in these service dates will also enjoy a discounted rate for winter lodge use.

Questions?

If you have questions, please send an email.  It may be that we missed something; thanks for your assistance to others by asking questions and pointing out areas that need clarification.

Cascade Pacific Council operates three lodges on the slopes of Mount Hood. These lodges are operated for Scout use each weekend, December through March.  Each weekend date is assigned to an age group (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, etc) to keep the tubing hills safe and everyone smiling.

New! Family Snow Days: Take your family to the lodge for a fun day in the snow!

Lodge Weather Policy

Lodges are open unless ODOT closes the highway with no alternate routes, resulting in no access to the lodge. ODOT notices are posted at www.tripcheck.com. Please BE PREPARED for winter driving by visiting www.tripcheck.com for road conditions, and prepare accordingly.  No refunds are provided unless ODOT closes the highway.

Volunteers Needed!

The winter lodge program can only exist through the service of Winter Lodge Directors who each serve as host for one or two weekends each winter. Lodge Directors care for the building, turning on water, power, and other utilities, and shutting them down properly to prevent freezing when the weekend is over.

Lodge director benefits:

A small stipend to help with fuel costs and sno-park permit.

Opportunity to sign up a troop or pack early for preferred dates.

Free Winter Lodge Director hat.

Option to purchase Winter Lodge Director fleece jacket.

Warm feelings from helping Scouts have a great (and safe) adventure at the winter lodges!

New lodge directors serve initially as an 'apprentice' to learn the details of each lodge before hosting weekends on their own. Once they've learned both lodges, they're ready to host the lodges on their own.

If you're interested in becoming a lodge director, please download the application form. Questions may be directed to Jim Hill at the council office (phone 503.226.3423; email  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
