Leave No Trace Master Educator
Through a cooperative agreement with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, the Boy Scouts of America is now an authorized provider or the LNT Master Educator Course. In 2008 the National Scouting Leave No Trace Committee will offer fifteen National LNT Courses through out the United States.
The Cascade Pacific Council will host one of these National LNT Courses at Camp Pioneer on August 24-29, 2008.
The cost of the course is $250 at will include all course materials including a one year membership with Leave No Trace – Center for Outdoor Ethics.
The Master Course provides participants with a comprehensive overview of Leave No Trace skills and ethics through practical application in a field-based setting. The first day is spent in a classroom, introducing the course and schedule, providing in-depth information on the overall Leave No Trace program and the Center for Outdoor Ethics, reviewing gear, and packing. The remaining days are spent in the field on a short backcountry trip learning and practicing the principles of Leave No Trace. This course will focus on the techniques to use with Scouting Youth in both back country and front country settings.
Two highly experienced outdoor professionals who are both Master Educator Instructors will staff this course. Jim Virgin, course coordinator, brings twenty years of experience as an outdoor river guide. He serves in the Cascade Pacific Council as the Interim Council Vice President over Training and is a National Venturing Committee Member. Dan Howells, lead instructor, works for the Bureau of Land Management and is on the National Scouting Leave No Trace Committee. He has served as a lead LNT instructor at Philmont.
You will learn Leave No Trace techniques through skits, discussions, and hands-on activities. To practice Leave No Trace teaching strategies in a supportive, educational environment, each participant will teach a short session geared toward minimum impact Leave No Trace concerns.
Since the back country portion of this course will take place in the Jefferson Wilderness area, participants will be expected to have functional back packing experience and provide their own back packing gear. A suggested equipment list will be provided upon enrollment. During the front country sessions, the course will provide “patrol” gear for group session.
