In conjunction with the Cascade Pacific Council, Boy Scouts of America and local business sponsors, Horizon Air is proud to host the second annual Aviation Merit Badge Event on Saturday May 12, 2012 at the Horizon Air Operations Center at the Portland International Airport.

This event is open to registered Boy Scouts and Venturers and is aimed at inspiring aviation dreams in the Scouting youth of the Cascade Pacific Council.  The 2012 Aviation Merit Badge Event will provide the opportunity for Scouts to learn firsthand about career paths in the aviation industry. Guided by Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines and Scouting volunteers, the youth will be able to "kick the tires," see the wheel wells with mechanics and the flight deck of a Bombardier Q400  with line pilots. They will look into the guts of a Turbo Prop engine with employees who fix them, and take a tour of Portland International Airport with those who operate there.

Careers, from air traffic control to flight attendant, will be discussed. Pilots and engineers will teach them flight principles through the construction of a flying model aircraft.  Pilots will be on-site with their light aircraft to educate and afford an up close cockpit experience.

Registration opens March 14th for this one-day event offering instruction and experiences that, if completed, will offer the Scouts attending the opportunity to earn the Aviation Merit Badge. The cost for the 2012 event is $15.00.
