Community Service

Good turns come in all sizes - but are all equally important. Big examples are, saving a life, rebuilding a home destroyed by a natural disaster, cleaning up our waterways, working with a community to build a park, or representing the United States of America by placing flags on a veteran's grave for Memorial Day. Other qualifying good turns are small, thoughtful acts such as helping a child cross a busy street, go to the store for an elderly neighbor, collect food for the hungry, cut back brush blocking a traffic safety sign, doing something special for a sibling, or by welcoming a new student to your school.

Adopt a School

The hope at the heart of Adopt-a-School is to build strong, sustaining relationships with local schools by creating thousands of lasting community partnerships right in your home town. Through committed volunteer efforts – from landscaping and clean-up outside the school building to Scouts' active participation in school events throughout the year – the BSA® will become a defined presence in improving our nation's schools.

Guy Miller Tree Plant is a program designed to encourage Scouts in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington to become more involved with tree planting as part of their community service projects. This program offers a hands-on learning experience to Scouts of all ages, and teaches the value of maintaining our environment, and green spaces. Over the past three decades, 63,500 Scouts have participated in over 1,500 tree plants. During this same time, well over two million seedlings have been planted. Tree plants typically happen December - May. Visit our Information on SOLVE below to see how you can plan a year round community service project.

Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food is the largest one day event organized by the Cascade Pacific Council (CPC). Each year, our Scouts, unit leaders, and parents collect canned food and other items for local food pantries. On the first Saturday of every December donations will be taken by Scouts to drop-sites at designated food pantries in their hometown or to the Oregon Food Bank where they will be distributed to local food agencies. Clark country areas are directed through walk and knock to volunteer online.

These events can be open to the public or remain closed exclusively for your Scout group. SOLVE provides free cleanup supplies, small grants, advice, and support.
